From a Different Shore

I first ran into this Hong Kong couple while they were filling out their paperwork at the County Clerk's office.

After they had turned it in, they thought they were going to get married on the spot and kept telling the clerk to perform the ceremony.  She was getting a little exasperated; I stepped in and told them to follow me.  I don't know if they trusted me because I was also ethnically Chinese, but they agreed to come with me to the rotunda.  Donald Bird performed their ceremony there, and I witnessed for them.  Afterward, they were all tears and smiles, and insisted on taking a picture with me.  "You don't know what it means to us to be able to get married in your country," they told me repeatedly.

No, I don't know, and neither will most other straight Americans like me.
